The Republic of Korea are Asia’s most successful team at the FIFA World Cup, having finished fourth at the 2002 edition on their home soil.
Led by star winger Son Heungmin, the Republic of Korea head into the FIFA World Cup 2026, aiming to embrace a more aggressive approach as they prepare for their 12th appearance on football’s biggest stage.
Ever-present at every World Cup since Mexico 1986, the Asian giants produced their finest run on home soil at the 2002 edition, finishing fourth: a benchmark they will be eager to challenge once again.
Described as “the heart” of the team by coach Hong Myung-Bo, Son has called on his side not to show stronger teams more respect, urging belief as the Koreans look to make a statement.
The only Asian side to go unbeaten in qualifying, the Republic of Korea will arrive with momentum, as they face co-hosts Mexico, South Africa and Czechia in Group A.
