Which side needs what to qualify? Permutations explained

After the opening round of matches, FIFA+ has worked out all the potential scenarios for every team in terms of qualifying and going out.

  • Portugal, Belgium, France, Saudi Arabia and England are all well placed to advance

  • A defeat for Germany against Spain would all but eliminate the 2014 champions

  • These calculations will be updated after every match

     

    Who needs what to make it through to the Round of 16 at the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022™? And who could soon be on their way home?

    With Matchday 1 now over, FIFA+ has analysed all the key scenarios going forward.

    Group A
    Qatar-Senegal (25 November, 16:00 local time)
    Netherland-Ecuador (25 November, 19:00 local time)

    1. While Qatar cannot make it through to the knock-out stage by the end of Matchday 2, the hosts will be out if they lose and Ecuador fail to win against the Netherlands.
    2. A win would see Ecuador through if Senegal fail to get all three points against Qatar.
    3. A defeat would send Senegal out if the Netherlands fail to win against Ecuador.
    4. A win would be enough for the Netherlands to go through if Qatar do not beat Senegal.

    Group B
    Wales-IR Iran (25 November, 13:00 local time)
    England-USA (25 November, 22:00 local time)

    1. A win would see England into the Round of 16.
    2. A defeat would send IR Iran out.
    3. Neither Wales nor USA can have their fate sealed either way on Matchday 2.

    Group C
    Poland-Saudi Arabia(26 November, 16:00 local time)
    Argentina-Mexico(26 November, 22:00 local time)

    1. A defeat would send Argentina out.
    2. A win would see Saudi Arabia into the Round of 16.
    3. Neither Mexico nor Poland can have their fate sealed either way on Matchday 2.

    Group D
    Tunisia-Australia (26 November, 13:00 local time)
    France-Denmark (26 November, 19:00 local time)

    1. A win would see France into the Round of 16.
    2. A defeat would knock Australia out.
    3. Denmark and Tunisia can neither qualify nor be eliminated on Matchday 2.

    Group E
    Spain-Germany(27 November, 22:00 local time)
    Japan-Costa Rica (27 November, 13:00 local time)

    1. A win would see Spain through if Costa Rica fail to win against Japan.
    2. A win would send Japan through if Germany fail to win against Spain.
    3. If Germany lose, they would no longer be able to qualify if Costa Rica fail to win against Japan.
    4. If Costa Rica lose, they would no longer be able to qualify if Germany fail to win against Spain.

    Group F
    Belgium-Morocco (27 November, 16:00 local time)
    Croatia-Canada (27 November, 19:00 local time)

    1. A win would see Belgium into the Round of 16.
    2. A defeat would send Canada out.
    3. Morocco and Croatia can neither qualify nor be eliminated on Matchday 2.

    Group G
    Cameroon-Serbia (28 November, 13:00 local time)
    Brazil-Switzerland(28 November, 19:00 local time)

    1. A defeat would knock Serbia out if Brazil fail to win against Switzerland.
    2. A win would Brazil see through if Cameroon fail to win against Serbia.
    3. A defeat would knock Cameroon out if Switzerland fail to win against Brazil.
    4. A win would see Switzerland through if Serbia fail to win against Cameroon.

    Group H
    Korea Republic-Ghana (28 November, 16:00 local time)
    Portugal-Uruguay (28 November, 22:00 local time)

    1. A win would see Portugal into the Round of 16.
    2. A defeat would put Ghana out.
    3. Uruguay and Korea Republic can neither qualify nor be eliminated on Matchday 2.
