The match

Both Haiti and Scotland will end their respective World Cup waits in this Group C clash. Les Grenadiers’ most recent and only appearance at the finals came in 1974, where the islanders left West Germany without recording a point. Scotland, meanwhile, have had to wait 28 years to play at the tournament again, when a disappointing France 1998 campaign saw them exit at the group phase for an eighth successive finals. This is the first meeting between the two at senior level.

Scott McTominay is fit and available for Scotland after recovering from illness. Scott McKenna, however, will miss the game with a minor injury.

Possible Haiti starting XI

Placide; Arcus, Duverne, Delcroix, Lacroix; Bellegarde, Jean-Jacques, Casimir; Isidor, Nazon, Providence

Possible Scotland starting XI

Gunn; Hickey, Hanley, Souttar, Robertson; Gannon-Doak, Ferguson, McTominay McGinn; Shankland, Adams

What they said…

“I’ve been very fortunate to play in big games, win trophies, and play for the biggest club in the world but for me playing for your country is that one step above. To do it at a World Cup is a dream come true. I’m so proud and happy this group are the ones who have done it. We have the best fanbase in the world. We know how excited they are. It’s up to us to give them a good time. We know they’ll have a good time anyway, but we want to give them a better time.” Andy Robertson, Scotland captain

“It’s important we respect the opposition and make sure we’re properly prepared, which we are, and play to the best of our abilities. We have watched Haiti very closely. We think we know how they’re going to play, but every team can be different and maybe they will change last-minute. They have very dynamic players, especially the attacking players, so we have to be careful.” Steve Clarke, Scotland coach

“If you want to win matches, you have to score goals, no matter who the opponent is in front of you. The level of the opponents pushes us to raise our game. We will have to rise to the occasion, but the issue remains the same. If we want to achieve a historic victory at the World Cup, and then aim for qualification, we will have to score goals, regardless of the opponent”. Sebastien Migne, Haiti coach
