The match

Canada are already in uncharted territory as they prepare for their fifth fixture of FIFA World Cup 2026™ against Morocco at Houston Stadium. Prior to co-hosting this tournament, The Reds had never earned a point at the global showpiece, despite six attempts. That record has been swept aside in style, with an opening draw with Bosnia and Herzegovina followed by a resounding victory over Qatar. Success against South Africa in a tense Round of 32 encounter has a nation dreaming of a quarter-final meeting with either France or Paraguay in Boston.

Morocco’s road to the Round of 16 has been challenging, with five-time winners Brazil their first opponents and a hugely creditable 1-1 draw secured. Second place in Group C saw the Atlas Lions paired with three-times finalists the Netherlands in the Round of 32. An energy-sapping 120 minutes in Monterrey was decided in a hugely dramatic penalty shootout, with veteran goalkeeper Yassine Bounou producing a crucial stop from Crysencio Summerville allowing Ismael Saibari, who has since signed for Bayern Munich, to fire home the decisive kick. The African side broke new ground at Qatar 2022 by becoming the first nation from their continent to reach the final four.

What they said…

“We are excited for this moment. When you’re talking about Morocco, this is a team with incredible individual talent, very organized. And the results show the confidence that they have right now. They play with swagger. We know we are into a massive challenge.” Jesse Marsch, Canada coach

“I’ve played against this Morocco team in the last WC. I’ve told the guys: play the game, not the occasion. Just remember that we are all in this together. At the end of the day, it’s 11 v 11, the ball is still round, the pitch is the same size. The whole world is going to be watching. Let’s go out there and put our best performance.” Alistair Johnston, Canada defender

“We have a lot of respect for this team, they have quality. The level we showed in these last games will not be enough. We need to show it in the pitch to win. This is the most difficult game, because is the next one. We already played against the Netherlands, it’s in the past. If we have to play another match, that will be the hardest one. I like Canada’s energy, their intensity, the way everything is well prepared. They have an identity, everything is under control, even the throw-ins. They play to their strengths.” Mohamed Ouahbi, Morocco coach

Seven matches will have been played at Houston Stadium by tournament’s end, and has already bore witness to history. Curacao played and scored in their first World Cup match there in a 7-1 final with Germany, while Cristiano Ronaldo became the first man to score in six World Cups during Portugal’s 5-0 win over Uzbekistan, and Cape Verde secured passage to the knockouts in their maiden global finals with a 0-0 draw against Saudi Arabia. The first knockout match played here was a thriller, with Brazil edging out Japan 2-1.

The venue is the home of the NFL’s Houston Texans and opened in 2002. It is no stranger to hosting big events, having served as the venue for two Super Bowls. A host of the MLS All-Star game, national team fixtures of both USA and Mexico, as well as three games at the Copa America Centenario in 2016, Houston Stadium has plenty of football pedigree, which has been on full display at World Cup 2026.
