The match
The FIFA World Cup 2026™ Round of 32 turns its attention to Houston, Texas, where Brazil will face Japan. The Seleção arrive into the knockout stage firing on all cylinders. After an opening 1-1 draw to Morocco, they collected successive 3-0 victories over Haiti and Scotland with Vinicius Jr. notching four goals to claim top spot in Group C.
Japan enjoyed a very solid group stage campaign as well. They twice rallied from deficits to earn a 2-2 draw with Netherlands to begin the tournament, then followed that with a 4-0 romp over Tunisia and a 1-1 draw against Sweden to finish second in Group F. Daichi Kamada and Ayase Ueda have each scored a pair of goals in what has been a record-setting tournament thus far for the Asian heavyweights.
The winner of this clash advances to a Round of 16 date with either Côte d’Ivoire or Norway at New York New Jersey Stadium on 5 July.

Previous World Cup meetings
The lone previous match-up between these two sides at the global finals came in the Germany 2006 group stage. Pitted in the Group F finale in Dortmund, Japan stunned the then-reigning champions with an opening goal in the 34th minute from Keiji Tamada. It was just the wake-up call Brazil needed, as Ronaldo levelled right before half-time. Brazil then kicked into gear in the second stanza with goals from Juninho and Gilberto, before Ronaldo tacked on his second of the day, which equalled Gerd Muller’s then all-time World Cup goals record of 14.

Houston Stadium is the home of the NFL’s Houston Texans and opened in 2002. It is no stranger to hosting big events, having served as the venue for two Super Bowls. A host of the MLS All-Star game, national team fixtures of both USA and Mexico, as well as three games at the Copa America Centenario in 2016, Houston Stadium has plenty of football pedigree, which has been on full display at World Cup 2026.
Seven matches will have been played at Houston Stadium by tournament’s end, and has already bore witness to history. Curaçao played and scored in their first World Cup match there in a 7-1 final with Germany, while Cristiano Ronaldo became the first man to score in six World Cups during Portugal’s 5-0 win over Uzbekistan, and Cabo Verde secured passage to the knockouts in their maiden global finals with a 0-0 draw against Saudi Arabia.
