The match
This bout pits a pair of sides who have been made to wait to play at the World Cup. Austria last featured on the global stage at France 1998, before finally ending 28 years of hurt thanks to a dramatic UEFA qualifying campaign. For Jordan, meanwhile, this match represents their World Cup debut. Al-Nashama followed up a first-ever AFC Asian Cup final appearance in 2024 with a stellar qualifying campaign, losing just three of 16 preliminaries to soar into this tournament. This will the pair’s first-ever meeting at senior level.

Located in the city of Santa Clara, San Francisco Bay Area Stadium is one of the newer grounds tasked with hosting World Cup 2026. The ground has been home to the NFL’s San Francisco 49ers since its opening in 2014, and hosted Super Bowl 50 in February 2016, where Coldplay headlined the half-time show with support from Beyonce and Bruno Mars. The venue also staged the first match of the Copa America Centenario in June 2016 as Colombia defeated USA.
